Regular oil changes are essential for keeping your engine running smoothly and preventing costly repairs. But the right interval depends on your vehicle, the oil it uses and how you drive.
Follow your owner’s manual
Your manufacturer lists a recommended interval in the owner’s manual. Many modern vehicles using synthetic oil can go 7,500 to 10,000 miles, while older engines using conventional oil often need a change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Adjust for severe driving
Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, dusty roads and extreme temperatures are considered severe conditions. If that describes your daily driving, change your oil sooner.
Watch for warning signs
- The oil pressure or maintenance light comes on.
- The oil looks dark and gritty on the dipstick.
- You hear more engine noise than usual.
- You smell oil inside the cabin.
